No Fireworks?
With the Fourth of July falling on a Friday, there will once again be no fireworks show downtown to mark the holiday.
The city has confirmed that there will be no fireworks display in Chicago this year. Navy Pier will still hold its twice-a-week fireworks display on Wednesday, July 2, at 9 p.m. and Saturday, July 5, at 10 p.m.
Madeline Long, director of communication for the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events, told WGN News last year that “as has been the case for several years, the City does not host fireworks for the July 4th holiday.”
Not sure how many years in a row this is, but we remember working for the 3rd of July and it was an amazing shit show.
Every. Single. Time.
And we can't imagine the Department being able to handle anything like it nowadays. It would be broken windows, mass looting, multiple OC and Taser deployments, fights on every corner....you know, like it is all summer anyway.
And no arrests, just endless lawsuits until the next one.
Besides, the firework displays in the hood are almost better these days.

Show or no show, the hoodrats will still be downtown.
Glad the officers will get a reprieve from what we had to deal with (and potentially worse, but feel bad for the decent citizens that won’t be able to enjoy what use to be a tradition.
I also wonder how much of a role the nationwide demoRATic calls to not celebrate the 4th because of ICE deportations played in this decision.

I’m gone now, but I remember one of my last July 4th days off cancelled was in I think 2020 or 2021 (maybe both). They still put us downtown despite Lori not holding fireworks. There were tourists and residents alike coming up to us asking where the fireworks were. We had to keep telling them there weren’t any. Maybe the department couldn’t handle them, but what a sad reflection on the 3rd largest US city when we have larger celebrations for Mexican Independence Day than for our own country. Seems right out of a communist playbook.

I got a cousin who lives in the south loop with a high floor condo facing south. He says he and his wife sit on balcony enjoying drinks and watch the flashes from the gun shots all summer long. Now that insane that that happens in the third largest city in America.

Every year we go up to a nice small city on lake Michigan in Wisconsin for the fourth. Whole town comes down to the lake with zero problems. Not even loud people. The only police are there to direct traffic when everyone leaves at once. Guess what this city doesn't have ? It's worth the drive lol.

Hey asshole, I was making the point that the original poster was saying cops were doing things they busted others for: shooting off fireworks, and I pointed out that those cops were probably NOT busting people for fireworks and therefore were not hypocrites.
