A program designed to allow low-income Chicago residents to have their traffic fees waived has been made permanent due to a new law.
What we know: Under the program, eligible fees, fines, and costs due to traffic violations would be waived in Cook County for people experiencing financial hardship.
County judges determine who is granted a fee waiver.
The program was established in 2021 with a sunset of 2024. It was extended through this year, but state lawmakers voted to make the program permanent during this past legislative session.
What they're saying: The Chicago-based state lawmaker that sponsored the bill explained why he pushed for the change.
"We do not believe someone should be forced into homelessness because they can’t afford to pay a speeding ticket," said State Sen. Javier Cervantes (D-Chicago). "This new law extends grace to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and I am proud to be a leader in getting it passed into law."
We don't know - if you can afford a car, plates, stickers, insurance and gas, then you can afford to either obey the f#$%ing law or pay the fines that go along with breaking the law. Or just take the damn bus.
Additionally, if they're in danger of losing their housing because they constantly drive like assholes, maybe they can just live in their car to save money.

Poor, but they own cars? Are they exempt from paying the vehicle sticker fee, license fee, gas tax, etc? Always perplexed me, in my youth, I would take the Brown Line downtown and as we passed over Cabrini Green I would see parking lots filled with vehicles.
It’s the same ‘low income people’ (who probably can’t read somehow passed the Rules of the Road written exam if they even have a license) who routinely drive through Stop signs, ignore red lights, use the left turn lane to coast right back into traffic they can’t be bothered with and park wherever they feel like that can’t be accountable for their traffic violations.
So we all are not equal under the law ? Asking for a friend.
Their definition of poor people only includes those already living in their cars or illegals cut off from the cash flow. Bet it's done by demographics.
In other words, there will be absolutely NO incentive to follow the law and drive like decent people.
It is a continual attempt to make any and all criminal acts non enforceable.
This is why you have crowds in streets damaging vehicles and property. While claiming it’s a peaceful protest? So Arson, Burglary followed by CDTP are just people letting off steam? At a recent session too, they also changed it to where d/l’s won’t be suspended anymore for FTA unless the moving violation is apparently a misdemeanor. So there’s that. You’re exempt from the fine for driving like a jagoff in general but if you don’t even show up to court people, nothing will happen to you anyway. So what’s the motive for actually being a law abiding citizen these days?

By 9AM most of the cars were gone, many of the residents worked, also the baby daddy's.

He had safe places to park the car near a CTA stop away from the house, and tried not to have a pattern to his movement.

I received a half dozen tickets when I was a teenager. Paying for them hurt. That is how I learned to stop driving like a denizen of the ghetto. If I didn't have to pay them I’d have never stopped driving that way.

This is a stupid law! So those idiots who drive poorly and cause accidents don't get any punishment to encourage them to improve their driving. That means accidents go up because there is no punishment for running a red light or turning left in front of a car that has the right-of-way. Next OUR insurance rates increase exponentially. Who pays? We, the good drivers, pay for the bad drivers with higher insurance rates.
There is a Constitutional conflict with this state law. The 14th Amendment states ... "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Now anyone who gets a ticket can contest punishment by saying that "some people don't have a punishment for this same act and I do." That is NOT equal protection.

Any worked for income = for every one dollar earned, one dollar subtracted from welfare check, thus, no incentive to work, and bookoo incentive to be paid for whatevers in cash.
Baby daddy prohibited from residing in subsidized housings, plus, each additional newborn = added monies to welfare check, effectively incentivizing vigorous and numerous birthings.
Add the subsidizing of section 8 housing scattering as the incentive for rental property owners to pounce upon, thus, reliably affecting the cost of rentals by the obvious incentive for rental property owners to bump up their rents, knowing their assured 80% will be paid, and reliably presuming their section 8 tenants will not be dependably paying their 20%, thus, non section 8 rentals' costs are matching them.

So let me get this straight, No bail in Safe-T Act protects people who can’t afford to pay bail when another person could. But, this punishes people who can afford to pay for breaking the law, but not punish people who can’t.

This system is called day fines. The idea is that punishment should be equitable, so the penalty is in the form of hours worked. You run a stop sign and you get fined the amount of money you make in four hours. The guy mowing lawns gets fined $60, half a days income. Bill Gates, who makes God only know how much, might get fined a million bucks. Both violations are receiving the same punishment. Fair system.
To calculate the 'fine', the verifiable 'hourly' income must be known.
